A 62 year old woman is currently in detention at the Mboppi Gendarmerie Brigade, accused of baby theft. According to Cameroon-info.net, the drama began on Monday January 12, 2015, at the Butrans Transport Agency in Douala, when gendarmerie elements on patrol in the area drew the attention of the woman (name withheld), on the need to cover up the baby she was carrying, given that it was already evening, and getting cold. The 4 month baby was scantily clad in just a tee shirt and a diaper. They went their way, and on their return, found the baby still uncovered.
This immediately aroused their curiosity, and on questioning her, they realised that
this was a lady old enough to be the child's grandmother (born in 1953). The lady was further quizzed on the sex of the baby, the whereabouts of its mother, and her destination. The disparities in her answers (she told them she was headed for Bangante, whereas she was found at an agency to board a bus to Yaounde), convinced the gendarmes that there was more to the story.
She was immediately whisked to the Mboppi Brigade. Its Commander sent out a radio announcement, which led to the arrival of an emotional Miss Christelle Linda Yonda, the following day, Tuesday January 13, 2015, who is said to have searching for her baby since Monday evening, and was joyfully reunited with her infant.
